Sagal Awjama admits she used to have some biases towards Edmonton’s police force.
That was until the 21-year-old Somali woman became involved with helping the Edmonton Police Service run its bias awareness program, which offers full-day training to police recruits and helps them to communicate and build relationships with diverse communities.
“Ever since, I’ve been able to see things from both ends — from the policing end and from my experience from being in the community,” said Awjama, who is taking what she’s learned and disseminating it amongst Edmonton’s Somali community.
However, Awjama knows not all relationships can be mended overnight.
