We asked St. Cloud-area companies to share what they've learned about diversity in hiring. Here is some of their advice:
1. Follow the law. The federal Civil Rights Act prohibits employment discrimination based on religion. Unless it would be an undue hardship on the employer's operation, an employer must reasonably accommodate an employee's religious beliefs or practices.
2. See diverse employees as an asset. Instead of looking at what a job candidate doesn't have, judge them by what skills they do have, then figure out how to help them get what else they need.
