What an interesting time to be putting together an edition on diversity. As the nation prepares for the end of the administration of its first black president, a woman sits at the top of a major party ticket for the first time. And at the other end of the spectrum is the ongoing struggle, and tragic violence, between police and the public. Black — and blue — lives matter. All lives matter. To all of us. That's why diversity issues should be top of mind.

What does all this have to do with how you run your business? Plenty. As you will read in our special report to be released later this week, the value of bringing people of different backgrounds to your boardroom is immeasurable. If your uncertainty of courting millennial customers is costing you sleep — to pick just one example we hear often — it’s probably because you’re not involving millennials in the high-level, strategic discussions over your business’ future. The same can be said for issues involving any other group, whether it be race, gender or personal preference.
