Men dominate the workforce at Silicon Valley start-ups to an even greater extent than in the biggest tech companies, a study of hundreds of such firms shows, suggesting a long struggle ahead for an industry in urgent need of improving gender equality.

According to an FT analysis of 500 tech start-ups in the San Francisco Bay area with fewer than 100 employees, only 23 per cent are female, compared with 36 per cent at 10 top tech companies including Apple, Amazon, Oracle, Airbnb and Twitter.

The staffing data were compiled by Craft.co, which provides information and analytics on private and public companies, drawing on publicly available information posted by employees to social media and professional networking sites such as LinkedIn.
